A classic Kirgiz carpet, made around the turn of the century. The design is a traditional native Kirgiz pattern with no trace of Chinese influence, despite the proximity of Chinese carpet making centers along the Silk Road a short distance to the south of the region where this carpet was made. The three-flower border is slightly unusual, most Kirgiz carpets of this type having a four-flower pattern. The central field design is unusually bold and lively, making this piece very decorative
Wool pile with cotton warp. Pile in reasonable condition, but with wear in places.
Carpets of this type are usually called "Samarkhand" rugs by dealers in China, however they do not come from this town, but were made by Kirgiz weavers living along the border region between present-day Xinjiang and Kyrgizstan.
