Unusual 19th century Kirgiz (Samarkhand) carpet

Kirgiz (Samarkhand) carpet
code XR94
size (m) 3.65 x 1.95
estimated age around 1900
comments A spectacular example of a Kirgiz carpet, in outstanding condition with a thick soft pile, apparently never used, except perhaps as a wall hanging. Deep red and blue coloring.

The central field design on this carpet is also unusual, with a flower shape inside an elongated lozenge. The border with its curling "horn" shapes is typical of Caucasian carpets from this region, the former Soviet republics bordering Northwest China.

Wool pile with cotton warp.

Carpets of this type are usually called "Samarkhand" rugs by dealers in China, however they do not come from this town, but were made by Kirgiz weavers living along the border region between present-day Xinjiang and Kyrgizstan.
