Kirgiz carpet with unusual vine-design variant, around 1900

Khotan carpet from Northwest China (Xinjiang) with pomegranite design
code XR54
size (m) 3.12x1.42m
estimated age around 1900
comments This is a particularly outstanding carpet, since it has a strong design and almost no wear. The pile is thick and soft, which is very unusual for carpets from this region where a fair degree of wear and a lowish pile are the norm.

The design is rather scorpion-like, but it is in fact a variant of vine designs that are more often found as border motifs. The effect is bold and striking, with no trace of the Chinese influence that pervades later Kirgiz production.

The carpet is woven with a hair (possibly camel) warf.
