A well-drawn Khotan carpet from the oasis town in Xinjiang, with a design featuring various kinds of birds, including peacocks, pheasants, swallows ducks and geese inside a local rendering of a formal Chinese garden.
Khotan carpets have designs that draw upon traditional Chinese themes, but that interpret them in unexpected ways, sometimes with informal and open designs like this one that seem quite far from what we normally think of as a "Chinese" pattern.
Designs like this must have seemed like visions of visions of the good life in the parched desert region where they were made.
