This rug illustrates rather well the self-conscious borrowing of designs by the Khotan weavers who made it, around the middle of the 20th century. The design is called "English medallion" by Khotanese weavers, and variations of it are still woven in western part of Xinjiang. The layout of the design perhaps owes something to European influences, but in fact the motifs, studied in detail, owe more to Chinese-influenced Khotan traditions, with angular floral sprays and pomegranates.
