An antique Kazak carpet in excellent condition, original borders with a few minor, old repairs. Good thick pile.

We like older Kazak rugs very much for their lively and idiosyncratic designs: pieces such as this seem to have been one-offs and we rarely see two similar rugs. This rug is a variation on a design with "star" shapes enclosed by diamond shapes. Normally we see three star shapes separated and enclosed by three diamonds. In this case the weavers have imagined a linked field of star shapes, with the diamond enclosures merging to make a zig-zag pattern. Lovely, arresting and unique.
