From the 20th century onwards most Tibetan saddle carpets were made using the notched-shape that became popular during this period, eclipsing the earlier rounded shape that had been used in China, Tibet and Mongolia for a thousand years prior to this. This carpet is an example of this now-rare shape, dating to the second half of the 19th century. It has some wear, but is in good condition for its age and does not seem to have been heavily used. The carpet is constructed on a wool warp and weft foundation, using natural dyes. The borders are of auspicious lattice and pearl designs. |
