Saddle carpets are considered a vital part of horse tack in Tibet, especially for ceremonial occasions and festivals. Fine saddle carpets such as this one were traded, displayed and rarely used, which accounts for the excellent condition of some carpets such as this one. We like this carpet for its fine soft wool and the impressive green color (made by overdyeing indigo blue with rhubarb yellow). It is decorated with floral motifs and shou (longevity) symbols in yellow and green. Cotton warp and wool weft, natural dyes. |
