This design became popular in the early years of the 20th century, despite being based on designs dating back to the mid-Ming dynasty consisting of stylized flowers on a vine design. These designs are often called "lotus" (pema) in Tibet even though the lotus flower does not grow on a vine and bears only a vague resemblance to the textile motifs.
The carpet is woven on a wool warp and weft foundation. The colors used are early synthetic dyes and natural indigo on a natural beige background. the carpet is in good condition with no repairs.
