A superb example of a classic type of 19th century Tibetan carpet with a medallion design, derived from silk brocade patterns. The wool is thick, of excellent quality and has almost no wear. Presumably this carpet was kept in a box and not used or placed in a rarely-used guest room. The dark purplish red color suggests that it was a gift to a monastery, probably used (as were many fine carpets) in the private rooms of a senior lama.
