This rare carpet from the 19th century shows an example of the designs popular during this period, in this case a formal medallion design of angular scrolls and floral motifs, derived from Chinese decorative styles of the same period but rendered in characteristically Tibetan fashion. The carpet is constructed on a wool warp and weft foundation and is dyed with deep red (probably madder) on a beige ground. The carpet is in good condition for its age, but with some wear and a short pile generally. It has an original backing of blue indigo cloth at the edges. |
