Thangka painting is one of the world’s oldest continuous traditions of painting, having been started in Northern India more than a thousand years ago.

Today, thangka painting is mainly, but not exclusively, associated with Tibetan Buddhism. In the Himalayan region they are universal, being found in Tibetan and Nepalese homes as well as in temples.

The last two decades have seen a revival in this ancient art form. Torana Galleries is proud to present a selection of paintings from the Tibetan and Nepalese traditions, including works by painters with international reputations.

The minority peoples of Xinjiang and the oasis towns of Khotan and Yarkand produced some beautiful carpets in the last century. We currently have an exhibit of some fine examples at our Shanghai gallery.
