From the thirteenth century onwards workshops in the Suzhou area of China produced outstanding silk brocades for the use of the Imperial Court in Beijing. Silk is fragile and was rarely preserved in mainland China, but fortunately many items were acquired by Tibetan temples, where the dry climate provided perfect preservation conditions.
