Torana Carpets Frequently Asked Questions

Can I order a carpet you don't have in stock, such as a different standard size? Yes! It takes about 3 months to get a custom carpet made and we require a 50% deposit.

Can I get a unique size or a special design made? Yes, we often make unique sizes. We sometimes make custom designs such as color variations and unique designs. There is sometimes an additional charge for this if new design/graphing work is needed.

What does "handmade" mean? To us, this means an oriental rug that is entirely made by hand, using handspun yarn, hand-dyed and hand-knotted.

Why is handspun yarn important? Because it gives the carpet its texture and strength.

What kind of dyes do you use? We use both natural and synthetic dyes. The most important factor is dye quality (will not run or fade). We can tell you what kind of dye is used in each particular rug we sell, if you are interested to know.

What kind of wool do you use? We use only real carpet wools, mainly Tibetan and Iranian. Unlike many of our competitors, we don't blend with cheaper imported wools from Australia or New Zealand.

My new carpet is shedding some fluff: is this a problem? All new handmade carpets will lose some fluff in the first 6-12 months of use. This is not a problem and can be removed by vacuuming.

When I vacuumed my new carpet for the first time some loose threads popped up. What can I do? The threads are not actually "loose": they are knotted threads that missed the trimming process because they were pushed down into the pile. You can trim them to pile length with a small pair of scissors.

My dog/cat seems to like my new rug rather too much: what can I do? Some animals do like the smell of the lanolin in natural wool: you can try spraying the carpet with a little air freshener since most animals don't like floral scents. Another option is to get the carpet cleaned professionally since this will reduce the lanolin content and the cleaner usually leaves a light floral scent behind.

Can I look at the carpet in my house before I buy it? If you live in Beijing or Shanghai we are very happy to bring the carpet to your house and let you look at it in your home environment before deciding whether to buy. We do not leave carpets "on approval" however.

Should I haggle with you over the price of a rug? We sell all our rugs at fixed prices and offer the same fair price to all customers.

Will my new rug attract moth? Good new carpets are not especially attractive to moth since new carpet wool is tough and indigestible. Regular vacuuming will be enough to deter them from taking an interest in the rug. If you store the rug for a long period you should use some mothballs or proprietary insect repellant.

Should I use an underlay with my new rug? There are two circumstances in which an underlay is useful:

1) if you put a small rug on a polished floor: an underlay can help prevent slipping on the rug

2) if you walk on the rug with shoes on: an underlay can reduce wear in this situation.

You don't necessarily need an underlay if you walk on your rug without shoes on, since handmade oriental rugs are tough and will easily stand up to this kind of wear.

Are any children employed in your factories? No. All our workers are aged 15 years or over. We regularly inspect all our carpet production sites to ensure compliance.

Are the dyes used in your carpets non-toxic? Yes: we only use non-toxic, environmentally-friendly metal-free dyes.

What does "Tibetan" mean? When we say "Tibetan Carpet" we mean a carpet made in the Tibetan Autonomous Region, using traditional Tibetan methods. Many of our competitors manufacture carpets they call "Tibetan", but these are made in places outside of Tibet (such as Nepal and India) by non-Tibetan workers.

Can you ship overseas? Yes, we arrange door-to-door shipping of our rugs and carpets.

Should I use my antique rug on the floor? It depends on how rare/ expensive the rug is and how much you treasure it. Many antique rugs are tough, but it seems a shame to wear a rug out in 20 years that has already lasted 100 years. We suggest to place antique rugs in low-traffic areas and not to walk on them in shoes. Mounting rugs on the wall is another alternative.

How can I hang a rug on the wall? We suggest to fix a piece of carpet-tack strip to the wall and then mount the rug on this. Carpet-tack strip is the stuff used to fix fitted carpets to the edges of rooms. It consists of a strip of wood with lots of tiny tacks in. This is fine for most carpets because the tacks do not damage the carpet.
